Rex Manning Day’s Top Music Videos of 2012 {Part 1}

June 5, 2012 in Alternative, Electro, Electronic, Experimental, Folk, Pop, Punk, Rap, Rock, Top 2012 by Rex

Grimes – “Oblivion” {Electronic}

After watching this music video we were left with a lot of unanswered questions: Why does the filming switch from a football game to a motocross event? What’s the point of having headphones plugged into a boombox? And most importantly, what’s that freaky move the cashier pulls two minutes into the video?? Not that we should expect anything less from a girl who is obsessed with potatoes.

M83 – “Reunion” {Electro/Rock}

Not only does this video star a bunch of creepy children with glowing eyes and telekinetic powers, it also contains a tribute to the late Beastie Boy Adam “MCA” Yauch; (as seen on the street map which reads “Adam Yauch Ave”).

Santigold – “Big Mouth” {Alternative Pop/Rap}

The only thing I understand about this video is that it is utterly insane. Cartooned cactuses…tribal dance moves on top of planet Saturn…what’s not to love?

Cloud Nothings – “Stay Useless” {Rock/Punk}

This video stars an animated schoolchild who survives a Magic School Bus-like adventure, and then gets dropped onto a deserted island next to an angry giant ape; (talk about a bus ride from hell).

Orbital – “Wonky” {Electronic}

Thanks to this music video we’re never going to be able to look at a cat the same way again, but nothing will compare to comedian Mat Horne’s's kitty-cat issues, which he clearly needs to deal with ASAP; (kitty plates? Really?)

Grinderman – “When My Baby Comes” {Alternative Rock}

I know all you Nick Cave fans out there will suck up anything the great man releases (us included), but this music video is truly a must-watch thanks to some awesome stop-motion animation footage. Has Nick Cave ever released anything bad?

The Flaming Lips – “Supermoon Made Me Want to Pee” ft. Prefuse 73 {Experimental} (NSFW)

After getting bombarded with weird/random animated images for three and a half minutes, this video ends on a high note after a (SPOILER ALERT!) caveman whips out his peen and urinates a skull.

Spiritualized – “Hey Jane” {Rock}

This music video got a lot of people talking (and not all of the talk has been positive), but its underlying message should resonate with any viewer; (especially after Laura Jane Grace’s announcement).  The video stars Tyra Sanchez, a drag artist who won the second series of RuPaul’s Drag Race.

Ghost Lake – “Late Spring Morning Sunlight” {Indie Folk}

Getting introduced to this track in the middle of spring was a nice surprise this year, but the video was truly the icing on the cake thanks to some strange, interpretive dance moves and creepy animal face masks (which were handmade by the band’s main-man Henric Wallmark and his sister).

The Cribs – “Glitters Like Gold” {Pop/Rock}

Are you one of those music nerds who learned everything you know about music by watching Pop-Up Video? (Story of my life). If you are, then you’ll definitely appreciate this interactive music video; (be sure to click on the pop-ups to learn some fascinating facts about the band).

Unknown Mortal Orchestra – “Thought Ballune” {Indie Rock}

Fact: There ain’t no party like an Unknown Mortal Orchestra party…especially when you’re trapped in a room full of airheads and laced cupcakes.
